Champaign, IL – Central Illinois residents are bracing for a significant winter storm set to bring heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions beginning late Saturday night. Forecasters predict snowfall totals of 6 to 14 inches, with the heaviest accumulations expected south of I-72.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Saturday night through Monday morning. Snowfall will intensify Sunday afternoon, accompanied by strong northeast winds reaching 16–25 mph, creating areas of blowing snow and limited visibility. Hazardous driving conditions are likely, especially on bridges and overpasses.

The NWS advises against unnecessary travel during the storm. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should equip their vehicles with emergency supplies, including a shovel, flashlight, blankets, and a first aid kit. Freezing rain may also pose additional risks in areas south of Highway 50.

Snowfall is expected to taper off by early Monday, but frigid temperatures will persist throughout the week. Highs will remain in the low 20s, with overnight lows dropping into the single digits. By Tuesday, skies will clear, offering some relief with partly sunny conditions.

Residents should monitor local weather updates for the latest developments. Prepare now for possible power outages or delays, and ensure your household is stocked with essentials.
