Springfield, IL – A severe weather system is moving through Illinois this week, bringing strong gusty winds and heavy rain. The worst of the weather is expected on Wednesday, with winds gusting up to 50 mph, particularly in areas southeast of I-55. These winds could make travel difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

According to the National Weather Service, the most intense winds will be between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., with conditions potentially worsening outside of thunderstorms. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor objects and exercise caution while driving. Peak gusts will be between 40 and 50 mph across the region, with scattered tree and power line damage expected.

Additionally, widespread heavy rainfall is likely, with some areas expected to receive up to 8 inches of rain by the weekend, increasing the risk of flash flooding. This is especially concerning in southeast Illinois, where flooding along the Little Wabash, Embarras, and Wabash Rivers is possible.

Severe storms are expected to begin in the morning hours, with the possibility of large hail and tornadoes in the afternoon. Emergency preparedness is recommended, as storms will move eastward through the region. Stay tuned to local alerts for any updates.
