Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents are preparing for a major winter storm this weekend, with forecasts predicting over 10 inches of snow and blustery conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch starting Saturday night, warning of dangerous travel and potential road closures along I-72 and other major routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, IL, heavy snow will begin late Saturday and persist through Monday morning, with the heaviest accumulation expected Sunday. Gusting winds of 20–30 mph could create whiteout conditions, especially on open highways like I-72 and I-55. Ice accumulation is also likely in some areas, adding to hazardous driving conditions.
Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel and stock up on emergency supplies, including food, water, and blankets. Drivers venturing out should carry winter survival kits, including jumper cables, flashlights, and extra clothing, in case of emergencies.
The storm is expected to hit cities including Springfield, Decatur, and Jacksonville, where temperatures will dip into the teens Saturday night. By Sunday, snow totals could reach up to 21 inches in some areas. Gusts of up to 28 mph may cause drifting snow and reduced visibility, making rural and open roads especially treacherous.
Looking ahead, conditions will clear by Monday afternoon, with partly sunny skies and highs in the low 20s. However, dangerously low temperatures will persist through midweek, with overnight lows dropping into the single digits.
