Danville, IL – A major winter storm is sweeping through central Illinois, with heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected to cause hazardous conditions through Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Storm Warning, predicting up to 12 inches of snow in some areas, including Danville, along the I-74 corridor.
According to the NWS, the heaviest snowfall will occur overnight Sunday into Monday morning. Areas along and south of a Beardstown-to-Paris line could see 8 to 12 inches of snow accumulation. South of I-70, precipitation may mix with sleet and freezing rain, creating additional hazards. Total ice accumulation could reach up to 0.20 inches. The storm is expected to taper off by noon Monday, but blowing snow and gusty winds will likely reduce visibility, especially on open roadways.
Travel is strongly discouraged during the storm. If you must drive, officials recommend carrying an emergency kit, including food, water, and a flashlight. Visibility could be significantly reduced, and roads may be slick with ice and packed snow.
Monday’s morning commute is expected to be treacherous, with strong north winds of up to 29 mph causing blowing snow. Daytime highs will hover around 28°F but will feel much colder due to the wind. Drivers are urged to check road conditions at www.gettingaroundillinois.com before heading out.
The storm will ease by Tuesday, bringing clear skies and calmer conditions, but temperatures will remain frigid, with lows dipping into the single digits.
