Orlando, Fla. – Rip currents and summer storms are threatening Florida’s east coast Tuesday as inland cities like Leesburg and Orlando face the region’s highest rain chances and dangerously high heat index values.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and early evening, triggered by the east coast sea breeze. Rain chances peak inland at 60%, including in Kissimmee, Sanford, and Port St. Lucie, while coastal spots like Daytona Beach and Vero Beach face a 40% chance of rain. Afternoon highs will hover in the upper 80s to low 90s, but it will feel hotter—heat index values could climb to 105°F.
The mix of heat and humidity raises the risk of heat-related illness. Residents should stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Coastal visitors should also beware of moderate rip currents from Melbourne to Stuart beaches—swim near lifeguards and follow all local advisories.
Storms may bring frequent lightning, heavy rainfall, and gusty winds. Isolated flooding is possible in low-lying areas.
More showers and storms are likely into midweek. Heat and rip current risks remain elevated, and additional alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
