Melbourne, Florida – Swimmers across Central Florida’s Atlantic beaches should think twice before diving in Sunday, as a moderate risk of rip currents combines with dangerous heat to create hazardous conditions from Daytona Beach to Vero.
According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, heat indices could peak near 104°F today as temperatures climb into the mid-90s across East Central Florida. All Atlantic beaches are under a moderate rip current risk, with surf between 1 to 2 feet capable of sweeping even strong swimmers into deeper water.
Cities like Sanford, Leesburg, and Kissimmee are forecast to hit 95°F or higher, while coastal communities like Port St. Lucie and Vero Beach may see slightly lower readings but with added humidity. Rain chances remain low—just 5 to 10%—so relief will be minimal. If you’re heading outdoors, drink plenty of fluids, wear light-colored clothing, and reapply SPF 30+ sunscreen every two hours.
Beachgoers should heed lifeguard warnings, flags, and posted signs. Officials urge caution, especially for inexperienced swimmers or families with children.
The heat and rip current threat is expected to persist through Sunday evening, with additional advisories possible if conditions worsen.
