Melbourne, Fla. – East Central Florida faces a dangerous mix of oppressive heat and growing coastal hazards, with a Heat Advisory in effect today from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. High temperatures will range from 92° to 97°, pushing heat index values up to 109° across Orlando, Daytona Beach, the Space Coast, and the Treasure Coast.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, residents should limit outdoor activities, wear lightweight clothing, and stay hydrated. Heat risk levels are rated major for anyone without proper cooling or hydration. Inland, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are possible, bringing brief lightning hazards but little relief from the heat.

Offshore, Tropical Storm Erin is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane over the weekend as it tracks north of Puerto Rico. While Erin is not forecast to make landfall in Florida, swells from the storm will increase the risk of dangerous rip currents and hazardous boating conditions starting Monday.

Authorities urge beachgoers to avoid swimming in unguarded areas early next week and for boaters to monitor marine advisories. Heat risks end tonight, but coastal hazards could persist through Thursday.
