Wichita, Kansas – Damaging winds, hail, and heavy rainfall are expected to slam parts of Kansas tonight, with storms likely to intensify after 9 p.m., posing a renewed threat for flash flooding in already saturated areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, the strongest cells will sweep across western into southern Kansas with wind gusts up to 70 mph, nickel-size hail, and locally heavy rainfall. Areas at highest risk include Wichita, Hutchinson, Harper, and Pratt, where ongoing flooding could worsen due to saturated soil.
Cities in the Level 2 severe risk zone—highlighted in yellow—should prepare for rapid storm development. Power outages and road hazards are possible. Russell and Salina fall under Level 1 risk, where storms may remain more isolated but still capable of gusty winds and brief downpours.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, have emergency power sources ready, and avoid travel during the storm’s peak hours. Storm shelters should be identified in advance.
The severe threat will continue through early Friday morning. Additional alerts may be issued as storm paths become clearer later tonight.
