Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers along Interstate 35 and Interstate 80 should prepare for multiple rounds of thunderstorms beginning late Thursday night, with a higher risk for severe weather developing by Friday afternoon and evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, the first round of storms is expected to move through late Thursday night. A few of those storms could produce isolated large hail, especially west of I-35 from Fort Dodge to Council Bluffs. While this initial activity may be scattered, stronger development is possible as warmer, moisture-rich air spreads across the state.
The more significant threat arrives Friday between midafternoon and early evening. Forecasters warn that scattered severe thunderstorms could develop statewide, including in Des Moines, Ames, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, large hail and a few tornadoes are all possible during this window.
The Friday evening commute could be impacted along I-235 in Des Moines and I-380 between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, where heavy rain may reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways. Motorists should monitor conditions closely and avoid driving through water-covered streets.
Before storms arrive, patchy fog and drizzle may linger at times through tonight, creating damp roads and reduced visibility during early morning travel.
Residents are urged to review severe weather safety plans now and ensure alerts are enabled on mobile devices. Additional watches or warnings may be issued quickly as Thursday night and Friday’s storms develop.
