Davenport, Iowa – Drivers along Interstate 80 and Interstate 74 are navigating near zero visibility this morning as dense fog blankets much of eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois through 10 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect for areas along and north of the I-80 corridor. Visibility may drop below one-quarter mile at times, especially in low-lying areas and near rivers. Motorists could encounter sudden whiteout conditions with little warning.

The thickest fog is impacting communities from Cedar Rapids and Iowa City east toward Davenport, Moline and Clinton. Along Highway 20 between Dubuque and Waterloo, pavement temperatures hovering near 32 degrees may also create isolated slick spots where moisture settles on bridges and overpasses.

Morning commuters on I-80, I-74 and I-380 should use low-beam headlights and slow significantly. Officials urge drivers not to use high beams, which can reflect off the fog and worsen visibility. Leave extra following distance and avoid sudden braking.

As temperatures gradually rise late this morning, visibility will improve from south to north. However, damp roads could remain through midday, particularly along the Highway 20 corridor.

The advisory expires at 10 a.m., but additional statements could be issued if fog lingers longer in northern counties.
