Albany, NY – A turbulent start to November grips upstate New York today as a powerful cold front barrels across the Capital District, packing damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph. Streetlights sway, leaves swirl through alleys, and the Mohawk Valley braces for its strongest winds of the season by evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, a High Wind Warning remains in effect from 7 p.m. this evening through 8 a.m. Thursday. The strongest gusts will hit between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m., particularly across elevated terrain, exposed ridges, and along I-88 and I-90. Scattered tree damage and isolated power outages are likely. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should use extreme caution, especially across bridges and open highways.

A line of showers and isolated thunderstorms will accompany the cold front late this evening. Some gusts may briefly exceed 65 mph in bursts of convection. The National Grid advises residents to secure outdoor decorations and clear storm drains ahead of the front’s arrival.

Conditions turn sharply cooler Thursday, with sunshine returning but brisk northwest winds keeping highs near 47°F. The weekend ahead looks calmer and milder, with temperatures rebounding into the upper 50s by Saturday before another round of rain and wind Sunday.

With the first taste of early-winter weather sweeping the Northeast, tonight’s storm serves as a reminder — November’s transition season has arrived.
