Albany, N.Y. – An early summer heat wave is gripping eastern New York, with heat index values pushing into the 90s across the Capital Region and Hudson Valley through Thursday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Albany, rising humidity levels paired with highs in the mid to upper 80s will cause “feels like” temperatures to spike—especially during the late afternoon and early evening. Areas such as Poughkeepsie, Herkimer, and Kingston could experience heat indices between 90°F and 93°F as early as 3 p.m. Thursday.

Cities including Gloversville, Bennington, and Brattleboro will also see prolonged periods of warmth, with daytime highs near 87°F and muggy overnight lows in the upper 60s. These conditions are especially concerning for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations, as the body’s ability to cool itself becomes strained.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat hours (2–6 p.m.), and check in on elderly neighbors. Use fans or air conditioning where available, and avoid leaving children or pets in vehicles.

The unseasonably warm pattern continues into Friday morning, with some relief expected by the weekend. Additional heat advisories are possible if conditions persist.
