Sacramento, CA – Travelers planning to cross the Sierra Nevada should prepare for challenging conditions, as heavy snow and strong winds are forecasted through early Wednesday. Authorities have issued a winter storm warning for elevations above 5,500 feet, which includes key stretches of Interstate 80.
According to the National Weather Service, the region could see snow accumulations between 6 to 12 inches, with some higher elevations receiving up to two feet. Gusty winds reaching 50 mph will further reduce visibility, making travel hazardous. Snow levels are expected to drop to around 5,000 feet by Tuesday evening, impacting key passes.
Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall will make chain controls likely and could cause delays on I-80 and Highway 50. Residents and travelers are urged to check road conditions before departing and carry emergency supplies, including blankets, water, and non-perishable food.
As the storm progresses, conditions may improve by Thanksgiving morning, but lingering snow could still create slick roads. The extended five-day forecast shows a gradual clearing trend, with temperatures climbing slightly into the weekend. However, another system could bring light snow to the area by Sunday.
Caltrans advises drivers to monitor their QuickMap tool or call 511 for real-time updates on road closures and chain requirements.
