Mount Shasta, CA – A major winter storm is set to hit Siskiyou County starting Wednesday evening, bringing heavy snow, high winds, and potentially hazardous travel conditions through late Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, total snow accumulations between 6 and 15 inches are expected across South Central and Southeast Siskiyou County, with up to 2 feet possible above 4,500 feet. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph, making travel extremely difficult, especially along Interstate 5 from Black Butte Summit southward and Highway 89 east of Mount Shasta City.
In Western Siskiyou County, elevations above 3,000 feet could see 4 to 12 inches of snow, with local mountain peaks accumulating up to 18 inches. Strong winds, with gusts reaching 50 mph, may cause power outages and downed trees.
Roads, bridges, and overpasses are expected to become slick and hazardous, particularly affecting the Thursday morning and evening commutes. Residents are urged to prepare for winter driving conditions and monitor weather updates.
Snow levels will start near 2,000 feet before rising to 4,000 feet by Thursday afternoon, making lower elevations more vulnerable to early impacts. Travel disruptions are likely, and authorities recommend postponing non-essential trips.
