Hanford, CA – A powerful winter storm is bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to the Sierra Nevada, with conditions expected to persist through late Thursday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 PM PDT on Thursday. Snow accumulations of 1 to 3 feet are expected above 4,000 feet, with the highest elevations receiving up to 4 feet of snow. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph, creating whiteout conditions and increasing the risk of tree damage.

The storm is affecting a wide area, including Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon, Sequoia National Park, and surrounding mountain communities such as Shaver Lake, Grant Grove, and Huntington Lake. Hazardous travel conditions are anticipated, particularly during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

Officials warn that travel could become extremely difficult or even impossible in some areas. Those who must travel should carry emergency supplies, including a flashlight, food, and water. Road conditions can be checked by dialing 511 for updates.

Residents and visitors in the Sierra Nevada are urged to prepare for significant snowfall, reduced visibility, and potential power outages due to strong winds. Travelers should monitor forecasts and plan accordingly as the storm continues to impact the region.
