Barstow, Calif. –Drivers in California’s high desert could face dangerous crosswinds and sudden dust storms starting Friday afternoon as strong winds sweep through Death Valley and the western Mojave Desert.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Friday through 11 p.m. Saturday, impacting Barstow, Fort Irwin, Shoshone, and Furnace Creek. Southwest winds are expected to reach 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph, peaking early Friday evening and again Saturday morning.
High-profile vehicles on I-15 and Highway 127 should use extreme caution, especially near open desert stretches where blowing dust may reduce visibility. Loose outdoor objects should be secured, and minor power outages are possible due to falling tree limbs.
Winds may briefly ease overnight Friday but are expected to return stronger on Saturday, raising renewed concerns for outdoor plans and regional travel. This advisory follows a relatively calm April and is typical for spring wind events in the Mojave corridor.
The Wind Advisory remains active until 11 p.m. Saturday, and further alerts may be issued if conditions worsen. Travelers should monitor updates and avoid unnecessary travel during peak gust periods.
