Eureka, CA — A strong coastal wind event is expected to impact Humboldt and Mendocino counties throughout Sunday, March 30, with gusts peaking as high as 50 to 55 mph over coastal ridges and headlands.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, the strongest winds will occur from early morning through late afternoon, with peak gusts between 30 and 40 mph in most coastal towns, including Eureka, Fort Bragg, and Shelter Cove. Higher elevations and exposed ridgelines, particularly across the King Range and southwestern Humboldt County, could see gusts exceeding 50 mph.
The NWS warns of an increased risk of power outages due to downed tree limbs and debris on roadways. Drivers, especially those operating high-profile vehicles, should use caution in crosswinds. Wind gusts are forecast to steadily rise beginning around 10 a.m., peaking between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., before tapering off after 5 p.m.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid forested routes if possible, and monitor local alerts for updates. Similar conditions have previously led to hazardous travel and minor infrastructure damage across the region.
