Eureka, CA – Emergency officials in Del Norte, Humboldt, and Mendocino counties will conduct a tsunami preparedness drill on March 26 at 11 a.m., encouraging residents to practice their evacuation plans.

According to the Offices of Emergency Services, test alerts will be issued, instructing those inside tsunami hazard zones to walk to higher ground as part of the drill. Residents outside hazard zones should use the opportunity to review emergency plans for earthquake and tsunami events.

Officials stress that in a real tsunami, waves can continue for 24 to 48 hours after the first impact. Residents should avoid returning to hazard areas until an official “all clear” is given.

Residents are encouraged to check if their home, workplace, or recreation areas are within tsunami zones by visiting the Redwood Coast Tsunami Work Group website. Those planning to participate can also register their involvement through this form.

Planning ahead can help reduce stress and improve response times in real disasters. Emergency officials urge everyone to take part and be Tsunami Ready.
