Hanford, CA – Isolated thunderstorms packing lightning, small hail, and brief downpours will threaten parts of Central California through early Thursday evening, prompting safety warnings across the Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountains. Drivers and hikers are urged to seek shelter as storm cells roll across elevated terrain, with gusty winds adding to the danger.

According to the National Weather Service in Hanford, the storms will linger until around sunset, with the strongest activity focused in the Sierra Nevada and Kern County mountains. Some thunderstorms could drift into the southern San Joaquin Valley by late afternoon, bringing brief but intense impacts.

The storms may trigger erratic wind gusts up to 40 mph, sudden bursts of heavy rain, and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning. Communities near Lake Isabella, Tehachapi, and along Highway 178 should stay alert for fast-changing conditions.

Residents are advised to stay indoors at the first sound of thunder and avoid exposed areas. “When thunder roars, go indoors,” officials warn. Outdoor activities should be postponed, especially in higher elevations where terrain can amplify storm effects.

This is the latest in a series of spring disturbances to sweep the Central California region. Thunderstorm activity is expected to diminish after sunset, but more weather alerts could be issued if conditions persist.
