East Los Angeles, California – Air quality across East Los Angeles remains dangerously poor Sunday morning as smoke from July 4th fireworks and nearby wildfires lingers in the air, threatening the health of millions.

According to the South Coast AQMD, an Air Quality Alert is in effect through 10 p.m. Sunday due to harmful fine particle pollution. The worst impacts will be felt in the San Fernando Valley, the San Gabriel Mountains, and along major travel routes including Interstate 5, Highway 14, and I-405. Residents — especially those with asthma, heart conditions, or young children — should limit time outside and avoid physical activity.

Sunday’s weather will bring hot, sunny conditions across East L.A., with highs near 92°F. Patchy fog will clear by mid-morning, but heat and pollution will intensify throughout the afternoon. Calm winds and stagnant air are preventing smoke dispersal, leading to prolonged exposure risks.

To reduce indoor exposure, residents are urged to close windows, avoid using swamp coolers, and run air purifiers if possible. Sensitive groups should remain indoors and monitor real-time AQI levels at aqmd.gov.

Looking ahead:

  • Monday: Mostly sunny, high 81°F, patchy fog early
  • Tuesday: Sunny and warmer, high 88°F
  • Wednesday: Hot, high 91°F, continued haze possible
  • Thursday: Mostly sunny, high near 90°F
  • Friday: Gradual cooldown, highs in upper 80s
