Eureka, California – A potent storm system is forecast to bring extremely dangerous ocean conditions to the Northern California coast tonight through Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Mariners are urged to remain in port as hazardous conditions will escalate, with storm warnings in effect.
A powerful surge of northward winds is expected to reach 48 to 55 knots, while seas build to between 18 and 25 feet, creating steep, towering waves. The combination of these extreme winds and large waves presents a serious threat to vessels, with the potential to capsize boats. Mariners are advised to stay off the water and secure all operations as conditions worsen.
The National Weather Service also highlighted expected wind gusts at key coastal sites. The 10th percentile wind gusts forecast for areas such as Crescent City and Eureka will start at 21 mph but rise to near 49 mph by 5 p.m. Sunday, with an even higher risk of stronger gusts through Monday. The 90th percentile gusts are even more concerning, with Crescent City potentially experiencing wind speeds as high as 52 mph late Sunday.
Given the significant impact expected on shipping routes and local marine activities, coastal residents and visitors should prepare for intense conditions. It is strongly recommended that no non-essential maritime travel take place.
The storm warning remains in effect until Monday afternoon, and additional advisories may be issued based on evolving conditions.
