Las Vegas, NV – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to parts of California and Nevada through Thursday night, creating dangerous travel conditions in mountainous regions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Las Vegas, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the White Mountains of Inyo County, the Eastern Sierra Slopes, and the Spring Mountains-Red Rock Canyon area. The storm is expected to last until 11 p.m. PDT Thursday.

In California, the White Mountains and Eastern Sierra Slopes will experience significant snowfall. Areas above 8000 feet near the Sierra Crest could receive between 1 to 2 feet of snow, while elevations above 6000 feet may see 6 to 12 inches. Gusty winds up to 65 mph could cause whiteout conditions and power outages.

In Nevada, the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon could see 8 to 14 inches of snow above 7000 feet, while areas above 5500 feet may get 3 to 6 inches. Winds reaching 45 mph could cause tree damage and hazardous road conditions.

Travelers are urged to use caution, as roads—including Westgard Pass—could become snowpacked and icy. Visibility may drop below 1/4 mile in heavy snow and blowing winds.

Officials advise carrying an emergency kit with flashlights, food, and water. Motorists can check road conditions by calling 1-800-427-7623 in California or 511 in Nevada.
