San Diego, California – Mariners off the Southern California coast should brace for dangerous conditions this weekend as gale-force winds and choppy seas move in Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Gale Watch is in effect from 12 p.m. Saturday through 11 a.m. Sunday. Winds could reach 25 knots with gusts up to 40 knots, and seas may build to 10 feet in waters stretching from San Mateo Point to the Mexican border, including areas near San Clemente Island.

These conditions pose serious risks to small vessels and larger crafts alike, including potential capsizing, structural damage, and visibility issues. The affected area spans 10 to 60 nautical miles offshore—commonly trafficked zones for fishing boats, military operations, and recreational vessels.

Officials urge mariners to remain in port or secure vessels well in advance. Alternate routes or safe harbor docking should be considered, especially for trips planned between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The Gale Watch could be upgraded to a warning if conditions intensify. Mariners are advised to monitor the Coastal Waters Forecast (CWFSGX) for the latest updates.
