San Diego, CA – A 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck just south of Julian in San Diego County early Monday, prompting reports of shaking across the Southern California region.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 10:08 a.m. local time (17:08 UTC) approximately 4 kilometers south of Julian at a depth of 13.4 kilometers. The initial tremor was followed by more than a dozen aftershocks, the largest registering 3.5 magnitude near Borrego Springs.

Residents in San Diego, Escondido, Oceanside, and as far as Riverside and Tijuana reported light to moderate shaking. No injuries or major damages were immediately confirmed.

The earthquake struck along a known active seismic zone east of the Cleveland National Forest. California Integrated Seismic Network confirmed the cluster of activity as part of a reviewed sequence under ShakeAlert protocols.

Officials recommend residents in affected areas check for structural damage, secure furniture, and review emergency preparedness kits. No tsunami warnings were issued.

This earthquake is a reminder of the region’s seismic risk. Southern California typically experiences thousands of small tremors each year, but quakes above magnitude 5.0 are less frequent.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as aftershocks are likely to continue through Monday evening.
