Johannesburg, CA — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck near Johannesburg, California, early Friday morning, rattling the region. The earthquake hit at 8:05 a.m. UTC (1:05 a.m. local time) and occurred 22 kilometers east of Johannesburg at a shallow depth of 0.8 kilometers.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake’s tremors could be felt across parts of Southern California. The interactive maps from the USGS revealed that communities near Mojave Desert and other parts of the state may have experienced shaking. So far, no major damage or injuries have been reported.

Local residents are encouraged to report their experiences through the USGS’s “Felt Report” system, contributing valuable data to better understand the event. The moment tensor solution for the quake suggests it was caused by faulting along the region’s seismic zones.

Seismologists continue to monitor aftershocks, which could follow the event. People living in the region are advised to stay prepared, as additional tremors remain possible.
