Olancha, CA – Residents in Olancha felt back-to-back earthquakes within a 24-hour period, raising concerns about increased seismic activity. The first quake struck on Thursday afternoon, measuring a magnitude of 3.8 at a shallow depth of 2 kilometers. Hours later, early on Friday, a second, smaller earthquake followed, with a magnitude of 2.7 and a depth of 1.3 kilometers.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), both earthquakes were centered south of Olancha. The tremors were reportedly felt across the region, though no major damage or injuries have been confirmed. Seven responses were submitted to the USGS, with residents describing noticeable shaking from the first quake.
Seismic activity in this area, located near the Mojave Desert, is common, but two quakes so close together are unusual. The USGS continues to monitor the region for aftershocks. Residents are encouraged to report their experiences through the “Did You Feel It?” section on the USGS website to assist with data collection.
