Santa Barbara, California – Blustery winds are set to sweep across the Santa Barbara County coastline and the Santa Ynez Mountains beginning at 5 p.m. Wednesday, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph expected to last through 3 a.m. Thursday. Residents and visitors from El Capitan State Beach to Gaviota and Refugio State Beach should secure loose items and brace for sudden power disruptions.

According to the National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard, northwest winds will pick up strength late Wednesday afternoon, making travel hazardous—especially for high-profile vehicles crossing San Marcos Pass or along coastal highways. Officials warn that downed tree limbs and scattered outages are likely as the winds peak overnight.

The Santa Ynez Mountains’ western slopes and coastal stretches including Jalama Beach and Refugio State Beach are especially vulnerable. Drivers are urged to use extra caution, and those camping or visiting state beaches should anchor tents and secure belongings.

Strong wind events like this are common in late July, but tonight’s gusts could rival the season’s most powerful. Residents are advised to charge devices, keep flashlights handy, and avoid unnecessary travel along exposed routes.

Winds will gradually ease before sunrise, but advisories may be extended if gusts persist. Updates are available from local emergency agencies and the National Weather Service.
