Eureka, CA – A heightened risk of sneaker waves threatens the Northern California coast this weekend, posing serious dangers to beachgoers. The National Weather Service has issued a Beach Hazards Statement, in effect from early Friday through late Friday night, warning of large, unexpected waves capable of sweeping people into the ocean.

According to the NWS, sneaker waves may hit the coasts of Del Norte, Northern Humboldt, Southwestern Humboldt, and Mendocino counties, especially near jetties and steep beaches. These waves can move large objects like logs, increasing the danger. Officials urge visitors to stay farther back from the shoreline, avoid turning their backs on the ocean, and steer clear of rocks and steep beaches.

Weekend Weather Outlook

Saturday: Rain likely, high near 60°F, with winds shifting southwest at 9 mph.

Sunday: Heavy rain expected, especially in the morning, high of 61°F. Winds at 7-10 mph.

Monday: Showers continue with a high of 61°F.

Tuesday-Wednesday: A break from rain, mostly sunny with highs in the low 60s.

Residents should prepare for wet conditions and be cautious near coastal areas.
