Truckee, CA – A high avalanche danger warning has been issued for the Sierra Nevada, including the greater Lake Tahoe area, as heavy snow, intense rain, and strong winds create hazardous conditions through Sunday morning.
According to the U.S. Forest Service Sierra Avalanche Center, the warning is in effect from 5:15 a.m. Saturday until at least 5:15 a.m. Sunday. Areas at risk include the central Sierra Nevada mountains between Yuba Pass (Highway 49) and Ebbetts Pass (Highway 4). The warning does not apply to ski resorts and highways where avalanche mitigation efforts are in place.
Officials warn that widespread avalanche activity is likely, with large slides capable of burying or injuring people. Backcountry travelers are urged to avoid avalanche-prone terrain, including slopes, ridges, and areas below steep inclines.
Those in the region should stay informed by checking the Sierra Avalanche Center’s website at www.sierraavalanchecenter.org or avalanche.org for updates. Authorities caution that similar avalanche risks may exist outside the warning zone.
