Burlington, VT – Drivers across Vermont’s valleys and low-lying areas are waking up to dangerously limited visibility as dense fog lingers through early Friday. The thickest fog is reported along US-4 in West Rutland, I-89 near Williston, and portions of Berlin and Saranac Lake, NY.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the fog is expected to gradually dissipate between sunrise and mid-morning. Conditions may vary rapidly, especially in river valleys and rural routes where visibility could drop below 200 feet.

Motorists are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra travel time. VTrans and NYS transportation cams show poor visibility across key commuter corridors.

This kind of fog is common in early August due to temperature inversions over moist ground, but it can still lead to serious travel delays and accidents. Use caution at intersections and red lights, where fog can conceal oncoming traffic.

More visibility improvement is expected by late morning, but isolated pockets may linger.
