Burlington, VT – Vermont is preparing for an intense Arctic outbreak that will bring subzero wind chills, single-digit lows, and bitter cold from Thursday, December 11, through Monday, December 15. The frigid air mass will grip much of the Green Mountain State, including Burlington, Montpelier, Rutland, and St. Albans, marking the coldest stretch of the season so far.
According to the National Weather Service Burlington, the Arctic front will sweep in late Thursday, driving temperatures sharply lower. Morning lows will fall into the single digits and below zero in higher elevations, while wind chills may range from –15°F to –25°F, especially across northern and central Vermont.
Forecasters expect limited snowfall, though flurries and brief snow showers are possible as the front passes. The main concern will be the dangerously cold and blustery northwest winds, which will make outdoor activity hazardous through the weekend.
Officials are urging Vermonters to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and bring pets indoors. Frostbite can occur in under 10 minutes when wind chills drop below –20°F. Homeowners should also take precautions to prevent frozen pipes and check heating systems before the coldest nights.
The Arctic air is expected to persist through Monday, December 16, before slowly moderating midweek. Meteorologists note that another surge of cold air could follow later in December, keeping temperatures below seasonal norms.
Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service Burlington and the Vermont Emergency Management as the Arctic blast approaches.
