Buffalo, New York – Drivers across western New York could encounter slick spots overnight as rain mixes with and changes to snow behind a passing cold front, with light accumulations possible through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, rain will transition to a wintry mix and snow overnight as colder air filters in from the west. Areas east of Lake Ontario are expected to see the most persistent light snow and minor ice accumulation through the night, while locations farther west see conditions gradually improve toward morning.
Temperatures will dip just enough to allow untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses to become slick late tonight into the early commute. Cities including Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, and Jamestown may see brief bursts of snow, while Watertown and the Tug Hill region face a higher chance for steadier light snow through Wednesday morning.
By Wednesday, conditions turn slightly colder with lingering rain and snow showers, especially east of Lake Ontario. The National Weather Service notes that precipitation coverage will diminish from west to east through the afternoon, allowing travel conditions to slowly improve.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed overnight and allow extra stopping distance, particularly in areas prone to lake-enhanced snow. Additional updates may be issued if colder temperatures allow for more widespread accumulation through Wednesday.
