Gratiot County, MI – A brief EF-0 tornado touched down in rural Gratiot County on Sunday night, damaging a local cemetery as it traveled over two miles. The tornado, which struck around 5:50 p.m. EST, tracked along Hayes Road between Rich Road and Alger Road in southwest Gratiot County.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Rapids, the tornado brought winds up to 65 mph and reached a width of 10 yards. The damage, though limited, was impactful; a large tree was uprooted and fell onto a chain-link fence at a nearby cemetery, disturbing several headstones in its path. Other minor tree damage was noted along the tornado’s 2.4-mile route.

Despite the EF-0 tornado’s brief duration, the NWS reminds residents that even low-level tornadoes can pose risks to property and structures. No injuries or additional structural damage were reported in the surrounding area.

Weather officials continue to monitor conditions as late-season storms bring fluctuating weather across Michigan. Residents are advised to remain alert to further updates from the NWS.
