Boise, ID – A powerful winter storm is expected to impact Idaho starting Wednesday, bringing significant snowfall to mountain areas and rain to lower elevations. Local weather officials urge drivers along Highway 21 and other mountain passes to prepare for hazardous conditions, with up to 17 inches of snow possible at Banner Summit.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Boise, the storm will bring snow and gusty winds to elevations above 6,000 feet starting early Wednesday. Snow levels will rise to 8,000 feet by Thursday morning, turning precipitation to rain in many areas. Banner Summit could see 12 to 17 inches of snow, while locations like Bogus Basin may receive up to 7 inches. Lower areas, including Boise and Twin Falls, are expected to see rain and temperatures nearing 50°F by Thursday afternoon.
Drivers are advised to plan ahead for slippery roads and reduced visibility, especially in the mountain passes. Wind gusts up to 26 mph may worsen travel conditions. Those traveling along I-84 or Highway 21 should allow extra time and carry emergency supplies.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast for Boise shows rain continuing through Thursday night with highs around 50°F. Friday and Saturday bring a mix of rain and cloudy skies, with temperatures ranging from 41°F to 54°F. By Sunday, the area is expected to clear with partly sunny skies and highs near 46°F.
