El Paso, TX – A powerful windstorm is expected to impact southern New Mexico and western Texas on Thursday, bringing blowing dust and hazardous driving conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, a Blowing Dust Advisory is in effect from 3 PM to 9 PM MDT Thursday, followed by a High Wind Warning from 6 PM Thursday to noon Friday. Winds are forecast to reach 35 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 75 mph, affecting areas including the Sacramento Mountains, Tularosa Basin, and El Paso County.

Officials warn that visibility could drop to one-quarter mile or less, posing a significant danger to motorists. Residents with respiratory conditions should stay indoors. Power outages, tree damage, and unsecured objects being blown around are also concerns.

Drivers encountering dust storms should pull aside, turn off lights, and avoid using brakes to prevent collisions. Residents are advised to remain in the lower levels of their homes and avoid windows during the windstorm.

Winds will gradually weaken by Friday afternoon, bringing improved conditions. However, residents should remain cautious as strong gusts could persist into the weekend.
