Omaha, NE – A powerful blizzard continues to impact Nebraska and western Iowa, bringing whiteout conditions, hazardous travel, and dangerously strong winds. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a blizzard warning for the region, remaining in effect until 6 a.m. CST Wednesday.
According to the NWS Omaha/Valley office, snowfall accumulations are expected to reach up to four inches in southwest Iowa, while gusting winds as high as 65 mph will create treacherous conditions across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa. Visibility will be significantly reduced due to blowing snow, and road conditions are expected to remain slick and hazardous through the early morning hours.
Areas under the blizzard warning include Omaha, Lincoln, Fremont, Council Bluffs, and Nebraska City, along with numerous smaller communities. Officials warn that travel should be restricted to emergencies only, as sudden whiteout conditions may make driving impossible. Strong winds also pose a risk of power outages and tree damage.
Residents are advised to stay indoors until conditions improve. If travel is unavoidable, motorists should carry a winter survival kit, dress in layers, and allow extra travel time. Road condition updates can be obtained by dialing 511.
The storm is expected to gradually weaken after sunrise Wednesday, though lingering snow and wind may continue to cause travel disruptions through the morning commute.
