Syracuse, NY – A powerful lake-effect snowstorm is bringing dangerous travel conditions to central New York, with up to 15 inches of snow and strong winds expected through Friday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Lake Effect Snow Warningremains in effect for Madison, Northern Oneida, Onondaga, and Southern Oneida counties until 1 a.m. Saturday. Snowfall totals between 6 and 12 inches are forecast, with some areas exceeding 15 inches. Winds are currently gusting up to 45 mph but will decrease to 20-25 mph by Friday morning.

Travel conditions will be hazardous, especially during the Friday morning and evening commutes. Blowing snow may cause sudden whiteouts, significantly reducing visibility. Officials urge residents to limit travel if possible and to carry an emergency kit with a flashlight, food, and water if driving is necessary.

Drivers can check the latest road conditions by dialing 511. The National Weather Service warns that lake-effect snow can cause rapid changes in visibility and road conditions over short distances.
