Topeka, KS – A blizzard warning remains in effect for northeast and east-central Kansas from 8 p.m. Tuesday until 4 a.m. Wednesday, bringing high winds and snow that will create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Topeka, the affected areas include Topeka, Lawrence, Manhattan, Junction City, and several surrounding communities. Snow accumulations of one to three inches are expected, but strong winds gusting up to 65 mph will significantly reduce visibility, potentially dropping below 1/4 mile at times.
Officials warn that blowing and drifting snow will make travel dangerous. Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly, with icy patches and whiteout conditions posing serious risks to motorists. Residents are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. If travel is required, drivers should carry an emergency kit, including blankets, food, water, and a flashlight.
The Kansas Department of Transportation advises checking road conditions before heading out by calling 511 or visiting their website. Power outages are also possible due to strong winds and blowing snow.
Residents should take precautions by securing outdoor objects and ensuring they have emergency supplies on hand. The storm is expected to move out of the region by early Wednesday morning, with improving conditions later in the day.
