Topeka, KS – A powerful winter storm is sweeping through Kansas, bringing hazardous conditions, including heavy snow, ice, and high winds. Travelers are urged to stay off the roads as blizzard conditions develop early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Sunday to midnight Sunday night. Areas including Topeka, Manhattan, and Lawrence could see snow accumulations between 8 and 16 inches, with ice accumulations up to 0.2 inches. Winds are expected to gust up to 45 mph, significantly reducing visibility to under a quarter mile in some areas.
The storm is anticipated to make travel nearly impossible across portions of I-70 and other major routes. The NWS advises motorists to avoid non-essential travel. If driving is unavoidable, a winter survival kit, including blankets, food, and water, is essential. For real-time road conditions, dial 511 or visit the Kansas Department of Transportation’s website.
The worst of the storm is expected Sunday morning through Sunday evening. Snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour during this period, especially in northeast Kansas. By Sunday night, snow will taper off, but gusty winds may continue to blow snow across roadways, causing additional hazards.
Looking ahead, conditions will improve on Monday, with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures near 13°F. However, freezing temperatures will persist into midweek, so residents should prepare for slick surfaces and potential power outages caused by ice-laden branches and power lines.
Stay updated by monitoring local forecasts and emergency alerts. Limit travel, and prioritize safety as Kansas braces for severe winter weather.
