Mankato, MN – A powerful winter storm is set to bring blizzard conditions to southern Minnesota beginning Tuesday night, with heavy snowfall and strong winds expected to impact travel and infrastructure through Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service, a Blizzard Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 3 p.m. Wednesday for Blue Earth, Faribault, Freeborn, Le Sueur, Martin, Rice, Steele, Waseca, Watonwan, and Goodhue counties. Forecasts indicate total snow accumulations between 4 and 8 inches, accompanied by winds gusting between 45 and 55 mph.

The combination of heavy snow and strong winds will create whiteout conditions, significantly reducing visibility and making travel treacherous. Authorities warn that road conditions could become life-threatening, especially in open areas where blowing and drifting snow will be most severe. The hazardous weather is also expected to impact the Wednesday morning commute.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and prepare emergency kits if venturing out is unavoidable. Power outages are possible due to strong winds causing damage to trees and power lines.

Travelers can check the latest road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511mn.org. Conditions are expected to improve later Wednesday as snowfall ends and winds gradually subside.
