Blacksburg, Virginia – Strong storms are expected to move across Virginia Friday and Saturday, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail during the afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, severe weather will be possible both days, with the highest risk during Friday and Saturday afternoons. The storms are expected to affect the entire region, with some areas potentially seeing scattered hail and localized wind damage.

Hazards include hail up to one inch in diameter, brief heavy downpours, and gusty winds strong enough to down tree limbs and power lines. Though the tornado risk remains very low, officials urge residents to remain alert. Drivers should plan around afternoon hours if possible, and those with outdoor plans should monitor weather alerts closely.

Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. If you’re away from home, identify a safe place to shelter, and talk with family members about the possibility of severe storms.

Storm threats are expected to taper by Saturday evening, but additional watches or warnings may be issued if conditions worsen.
