Northern Illinois – A winter storm sweeping across northern Illinois tonight may create dangerous black ice conditions, impacting millions. Officials warn that even a light snowfall can lead to slick roads, especially as temperatures remain low overnight.

According to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, drivers should prepare for hazardous travel. Key precautions include ensuring a full gas tank, packing an emergency kit, and dressing in multiple layers for warmth. The agency emphasized that black ice can form quickly, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated surfaces.

The National Weather Service reports that snowfall accumulation is expected to range from one to three inches in most areas. While daytime temperatures may slightly rise, overnight conditions remain cold enough to freeze melted snow into ice.

Authorities urge drivers to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Getting stranded in freezing temperatures can be life-threatening without proper preparation.

Road crews will work to mitigate hazards, but black ice may still catch drivers off guard. Residents are encouraged to stay home if possible and monitor weather updates for changes.
