Wilmington, NC – Freezing temperatures are set to grip southeastern North Carolina this weekend, with lows plunging into the upper 20s early Saturday. Residents should take immediate precautions to protect sensitive plants, outdoor plumbing, and pets. A Freeze Watch has been issued from late Friday into Saturday morning for the region, including Wilmington and surrounding counties.
According to the National Weather Service, an arctic air mass will sweep across the area following Thanksgiving Day’s mild and breezy conditions. Friday night temperatures are expected to dip to 33°F, with freezing conditions likely extending to the coast by Saturday morning. Areas along I-40 may experience frost and hazardous travel conditions early in the day.
Friday will be mostly sunny, with highs near 57°F, but the real chill sets in overnight. The National Weather Service advises residents to cover outdoor plants and insulate exposed plumbing. Ensure pets have a warm, sheltered place to stay overnight.
The weekend will remain cold, with Saturday’s high reaching just 51°F under clear skies. Saturday night will see another drop, with lows around 31°F. Sunday will bring some relief, with sunny skies and highs near 56°F. However, overnight lows will hover in the upper 20s, keeping frost risks elevated through Monday morning.
Travelers and holiday shoppers are encouraged to plan accordingly for Black Friday, as brisk winds could make conditions feel even colder. Bundle up and prepare vehicles for icy conditions, especially in rural or shaded areas.
Looking ahead, temperatures will gradually rebound early next week, with highs returning to the upper 40s and lows near freezing.
