Bismarck, North Dakota – Dangerous, life-threatening cold remains locked over North Dakota as brutal wind chills continue to plunge as low as 50 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors through midday Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until noon CST Sunday for much of northern and central North Dakota, including the James River Valley. Officials warn that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as five minutes, with hypothermia developing shortly afterward.

The warning covers a wide stretch of the state, including Burleigh, Ward, Williams, Stutsman, McLean, Bottineau, Rolette, Dickey, Emmons, Kidder, Logan, Pierce, and La Moure counties. Cities under the warning include Bismarck, Minot, Jamestown, Williston, Dickinson-area communities, Rugby, Carrington, Oakes, Ellendale, Linton, and Garrison.

Travelers, outdoor workers, and anyone attending weekend activities are urged to limit time outside. Emergency managers stress the importance of wearing multiple layers, covering all exposed skin, and avoiding unnecessary trips. Vehicles should be kept winter-ready with emergency supplies in case of breakdowns.

Officials continue to call this a potentially dangerous situation, especially overnight and during early morning hours. The Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through noon Sunday, and additional advisories could be issued if conditions persist or intensify.
