Birmingham Area Faces Brutal Cold as Wind Chills Drop to Single Digits

Birmingham, AL – A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for central Alabamaas wind chills are expected to drop as low as 5 to 15 degrees overnight into Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, the dangerously cold temperatures could cause frostbite or hypothermia with prolonged exposure. Residents in cities including Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, and Annistonare urged to take precautions.

Officials advise keeping pipes insulated, as extended freezing conditions could lead to burst pipesPets should be brought indoors, and portable heaters must be used with caution to prevent fire hazards or carbon monoxide poisoning.

With subfreezing temperatures expected to linger through the morning, drivers should be mindful of black ice on roadways. Warmer conditions are forecast for the weekend, but another cold front may follow next week.
