Birmingham, Alabama – Multiple weather advisories across central Alabama are creating hazardous travel and exposure conditions Saturday, with strong winds, extreme cold wind chills, and light snow affecting several corridors.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Wind Advisory remains in effect for all of central Alabama through 9 p.m. Saturday, with sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching 35 to 40 mph. These conditions may make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, particularly along Interstates 65, 20, 59, and 85.
At the same time, Extreme Cold Warnings and Cold Weather Advisories are in effect from now through noon Sunday. Wind chills are expected to drop as low as -3°F in warning areas, with single-digit wind chills elsewhere. The cold increases the risk of frostbite with prolonged outdoor exposure and raises concerns for pets, plants, and exposed pipes.
A Winter Weather Advisory is also in effect through noon Saturday for northeast portions of central Alabama, including areas near Anniston and Gadsden. Snow accumulations of 0.25 to 0.50 inches, with isolated amounts up to 1 inch, may cause slick spots on bridges and untreated roads, especially along I-59 and nearby state highways.
The National Weather Service warns that even light snow combined with strong winds and subfreezing temperatures can quickly lead to hazardous driving conditions. Reduced visibility and icy patches are possible during the morning hours.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and monitor road conditions before traveling. Residents should secure loose outdoor objects and limit time outdoors during periods of extreme cold.
These conditions may especially impact early-shift workers, weekend travelers, and students commuting Saturday morning.
