Birmingham, Alabama – An active and potentially hazardous weather pattern is expected to impact Central Alabama this weekend, bringing heavy rain, a brief icing threat, and a low-end risk for severe storms before colder air moves in next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, multiple waves of rain will move across the region from Saturday through Sunday, with rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches forecast for much of Central Alabama. The heaviest rain is expected on Sunday, which could lead to localized flooding, especially in low-lying and poor-drainage areas.
Forecasters also note a risk for brief icing Saturday morning, mainly from Marion County eastward toward Cherokee County, as temperatures hover near freezing. While widespread icing is not expected, even minor ice accumulation could create slick spots on bridges and elevated roadways.
On Sunday, a Level 1 (low) severe storm risk is in place for areas near and south of Interstate 85, including Montgomery, Auburn, Troy, and surrounding communities. Threats include isolated brief tornadoes and damaging wind gusts, mainly between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
As the system exits Sunday night, colder air will arrive next week, with icy patches possible overnight where moisture lingers. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware and plan for rapidly changing conditions this weekend.
