Binghamton, NY – Drivers across southern New York and northeastern Pennsylvania should be prepared for potential travel disruptions Thursday as thunderstorms build across the region, bringing the risk of strong wind gusts and heavy downpours.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop Thursday between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., with a higher chance of strong to severe activity by late afternoon. Gusty winds may exceed 40 mph, particularly along the I-81 and Route 17 corridors near Binghamton, Cortland, and Elmira. A Hazardous Weather Outlook remains in effect, with conditions favorable for localized wind damage and poor road visibility.

Residents in Broome, Tioga, and Susquehanna counties are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods. Power outages are possible where gusts peak. Rainfall amounts will generally remain under a quarter inch, but isolated higher totals are possible in storm cores.

Spotter activation is not currently anticipated, though emergency managers will continue monitoring conditions.

Storms are expected to taper Thursday night, but rain chances remain high into the weekend. Friday brings continued showers and possible thunder, with temperatures reaching the upper 70s.
