Binghamton, N.Y. – Thunderstorms capable of producing damaging winds and hail are expected to roll through much of Central and Southern New York beginning Thursday afternoon, with the strongest activity likely between 1 and 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a slow-moving cold front will trigger scattered showers and storms moving northwest to southeast through the region. While not every storm will be severe, some may bring wind gusts strong enough to down trees and power lines, especially along the I-81 and I-88 corridors. Highs today will remain in the 80s, adding heat stress to outdoor activities.

The threat continues Friday as the front stalls, bringing another round of scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Repeated rainfall may lead to localized flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and places that see multiple storms.

Residents from Elmira to Oneonta and into the Catskills should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storm periods, and prepare for potential power outages. Hail is also possible in isolated cells.

Storm watches remain in effect through Friday night, and additional updates may follow if the threat escalates.
