Binghamton, NY – Lake-effect snow across central New York is expected to taper off later today, bringing a temporary break in precipitation before another system moves in on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Binghamton.

Forecasters say a brief dry period will take hold tonight into early Sunday morning. Temperatures today will reach the mid to upper 30s, helping to minimize any new accumulation from lingering lake-effect bands. Skies will remain mostly cloudy, but travel should gradually improve through the day as snow showers weaken.

Attention then shifts to the next system arriving Sunday. NWS expects a mix of rain and snow showers, with precipitation probabilities rising significantly across the region by midday. Cities including Utica, Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton, Elmira, Towanda, Monticello, Scranton, and Wilkes-Barre show rain and snow chances climbing into the 60–85% range through Sunday afternoon and evening.

Temperatures on Sunday will warm into the upper 30s and lower 40s, meaning precipitation type may vary by elevation and timing. Higher terrain areas may see more snow than rain, while valley locations are likely to see mainly rain with occasional mixed showers.

No major accumulations are expected from Sunday’s system, but occasional slick spots are possible during colder morning and evening hours—especially across elevated roadways and rural routes.

NWS encourages residents to monitor updated forecasts as conditions shift through the weekend.
